Plans Move Forward to Redevelop Former Pleasantville Key Food
A former Key Food supermarket in Pleasantville could soon take on a new mix of uses, as plans move forward to transform the vacant property into a day care center and multiple retail spaces.
The approximately 69,000-square-foot building, which previously housed Key Food for 25 years, is the subject of a proposal that would bring The Goddard School, a preschool and day care center, to the property along with three retail spaces. The proposal is currently under review by the Pleasantville Planning Commission.
According to the Village of Pleasantville, The Goddard School would occupy approximately half of the ground level of the former supermarket at 35 Pleasantville Road.
The project represents another example of how communities are looking to reposition large former retail spaces as consumer habits and local needs evolve. Rather than relying on a single large-format retailer, dividing the property among several users could introduce a broader mix of services while returning vacant commercial space to productive use.
For real estate professionals, projects like this also illustrate the changing role of neighborhood retail properties. Child care, health and wellness, fitness, food and beverage, and other service-oriented businesses are increasingly part of the tenant mix in local commercial districts, creating new possibilities for properties originally designed for traditional retail.
The proposal remains subject to the local review and approval process.
