Walmart Pursues Plans for Major Distribution Center in Orange County

Real Estate In-Depth • July 16, 2026

Walmart is exploring plans for a massive new distribution center in Orange County that could become one of the largest industrial development projects in the Hudson Valley.

According to plans submitted to the Town of Wallkill, the retail giant is seeking approvals to construct a 1.5 million-square-foot distribution facility on approximately 200 acres near Route 17K and Interstate 84. The project remains in the early stages of the municipal review process.

In a statement provided to media outlets, Walmart confirmed that it is evaluating the opportunity but indicated that discussions are preliminary.

If approved, the facility would further strengthen Orange County's position as a growing logistics and distribution hub. The region's proximity to major transportation corridors, including Interstate 84, Interstate 87, and the New York metropolitan market, has made it increasingly attractive for warehouse and fulfillment operations in recent years.

The proposal also highlights the continued demand for industrial real estate across the Hudson Valley, where developers and municipalities have seen increased interest from companies seeking large-scale distribution and logistics facilities. Similar projects have generated both economic development opportunities and community discussions surrounding traffic, infrastructure capacity, environmental impacts, and land use.

While details regarding projected employment numbers and construction timelines have not yet been released, the development is expected to draw significant attention from local officials, residents, and the business community as the review process moves forward.

The Town of Wallkill Planning Board is expected to continue evaluating the proposal as additional information becomes available.
