Peekskill Backs 57 Unit Affordable Housing Project at Broad and Howard Streets

A proposed affordable housing development in downtown Peekskill has received new support from city officials as the project moves forward in its efforts to secure financing.

The Broad Howard project calls for the development of 57 affordable apartments along with commercial space, structured parking and new public amenities at Broad and Howard Streets. Plans also include the renovation of two historic structures on Main Street and creation of the Broad Street Sculpture Garden.

The project has been in development since 2021 and has evolved through discussions with city officials, residents, business owners and other community stakeholders. The current proposal incorporates additional on site parking, landscaped courtyards and other design elements intended to complement the surrounding neighborhood.

The Peekskill Common Council recently authorized letters of support for the development, an important step as Broad Howard LLC seeks affordable housing financing from New York State Homes and Community Renewal.

The city and developer have also been discussing a potential Payment in Lieu of Taxes, or PILOT, agreement to support the project. Details of a final agreement have not yet been approved.

Located within Peekskill’s Central Commercial zoning district, the mixed use development would add new affordable housing while incorporating commercial space and preserving elements of the neighborhood’s existing historic character.

The proposal reflects ongoing efforts in Peekskill and throughout Westchester County to expand housing opportunities while encouraging investment in established downtown and commercial areas.
