More Than $1.5 Million in Grants to Support Bronx Commercial Corridors

More than $1.5 million in grant funding is being directed to business improvement districts and community organizations across the Bronx, providing new resources for projects designed to strengthen commercial corridors, support local businesses and increase foot traffic.



The New York City Department of Small Business Services announced the funding, which will be distributed among 15 organizations throughout the borough.

Projects supported by the grants will include lighting and beautification improvements, wayfinding, public art, marketing initiatives and merchant organizing.

Ten Bronx business improvement districts will share a combined $825,000 through the city's Small BID Support Grant program. The program provides additional resources to smaller BIDs that may have more limited operating budgets.

The funding will benefit commercial districts serving 161st Street, Belmont, Castle Hill, the Hub, Jerome-Gun Hill, Morris Park, Southern Boulevard, Throggs Neck, Westchester Square and White Plains Road.

For neighborhood commercial corridors, investments in streetscape improvements, cleanliness, marketing and public spaces can play an important role in attracting customers and supporting existing businesses.

The grants also come as many small businesses continue to face higher operating expenses and other economic pressures. Business improvement districts frequently supplement city services while promoting their neighborhoods, organizing events and working to attract businesses and visitors to their commercial areas.

In addition to supporting individual merchants, investments in commercial corridors can have broader implications for neighborhood economic development. Active storefronts, improved streetscapes and increased pedestrian activity can help strengthen the appeal of a business district for residents, visitors and prospective businesses.

The new funding represents continued investment in the Bronx's neighborhood commercial centers and the small businesses that serve as anchors for many of the borough's communities.
