State Approves Major Energy Transmission Project Through East Bronx

The New York State Public Service Commission has approved a key permit for Propel NY Energy, a major transmission infrastructure project that will bring a new underground electrical line through the East Bronx as part of a broader effort to strengthen the downstate power grid.

The approximately 90 mile Propel NY Energy project will add new underground and submarine transmission lines across Long Island, Queens, the Bronx and Westchester County. The system is designed to improve electrical reliability, resiliency and capacity while creating additional pathways to move renewable energy through the state’s power grid.

In the Bronx, approximately four miles of new underground transmission line are planned. The route will connect with Con Edison’s Tremont substation near Bronxdale Avenue before traveling through portions of the East Bronx toward Ferry Point Park and eventually crossing the East River.

Communities along or near the route include Castle Hill, Unionport, Morris Park, Parkchester, Pelham Parkway, Van Nest and Westchester Square. The project will also travel through the Zerega Industrial Park.

The project team has conducted extensive outreach in affected communities, including meetings with local businesses, elected officials, civic organizations and residents. According to Bronx Times, Propel NY Energy has held 33 open houses and 48 community tabling events as part of its outreach efforts.

Pre-construction activities are expected to begin soon, with major construction anticipated to begin in 2027. The overall transmission project is expected to be operational by 2030.

The investment represents a significant infrastructure project for the East Bronx and the broader region. Reliable energy infrastructure is an important component of supporting existing neighborhoods as well as future residential and commercial growth, making projects of this scale particularly relevant to the region’s long-term real estate and economic development.
