New York Leads Nation in Economic Growth, Real Estate Among Top Contributors

New York’s economy grew at the fastest rate in the nation during the second quarter of 2026, providing a positive economic indicator for real estate professionals and the clients and communities they serve.
According to new data from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, New York’s real gross domestic product increased at an annual rate of 4 percent from the first quarter to the second quarter, the highest rate of any state and nearly twice the national growth rate of 2.2 percent.
Of particular interest to the real estate industry, real estate and rental and leasing was among the leading sectors contributing to New York’s economic growth, along with finance and insurance, information, and professional, scientific and technical services.
Governor Kathy Hochul highlighted the new figures as evidence of the state’s continued economic momentum, pointing to investments in job creation, workforce development and regional revitalization. Major private-sector investments underway across New York include projects involving IBM, Micron, Regeneron, Chobani and Fairlife, which are expected to support thousands of jobs and additional economic activity.
What does this mean for REALTORS® and their clients?
Economic growth provides important context for real estate decisions. A strong economy can support employment, business investment and demand for housing and commercial space. Major employers investing in New York can also have a ripple effect in surrounding communities as workers need housing and businesses benefit from increased economic activity.
The latest figures also give REALTORS® a useful data point to share with buyers, sellers, investors and business owners who may have questions about New York’s economic outlook: New York led all 50 states in economic growth during the second quarter, and real estate was among the industries contributing to that performance.
The numbers should be considered alongside local market conditions. Statewide GDP growth does not mean that every housing or commercial real estate market is experiencing the same trends, and affordability, inventory, interest rates, property taxes and other factors continue to influence individual real estate decisions.
For REALTORS®, the report provides another piece of credible economic data to help put local market conversations into a broader context. New York is attracting significant investment, its economy is growing, and the real estate sector is contributing to that growth.
