Four Bronx Subway Stations Slated for New Fare Gates

The MTA is expanding its next generation subway fare gate program, with four Bronx stations among the next 20 locations slated to receive upgrades.

The Bronx stations include 3 Av–149 St, 161 St–Yankee Stadium, Fordham Rd and Parkchester. Early station preparation work is expected to begin this month, with installation of the new gates beginning by the end of 2026.

The expansion follows a 20-station pilot program that the state says resulted in an average 35 percent reduction in fare evasion. The new gates are also designed to improve accessibility and passenger flow, providing wider, easier entry for riders using mobility devices as well as those traveling with strollers or luggage.

The initiative is part of the MTA’s 2025–2029 Capital Plan and a $1.1 billion investment to modernize fare control areas at 150 subway stations. Two Bronx stations, 3 Av–138 St and E 180 St, were included in the initial pilot, along with Bedford Park Blvd and Kingsbridge Rd.

For Bronx communities, the expansion represents continued investment in the transit infrastructure that connects residents to employment, housing, businesses and neighborhoods throughout New York City. Modernizing heavily used stations can also improve the overall experience and accessibility of the neighborhoods they serve.

The MTA plans to continue the rollout in 2027, with another 30 stations expected to be under construction by the end of next year.
