New York Announces 16 Arrests in Statewide Auto Insurance Fraud Crackdown

Governor Kathy Hochul announced that 16 individuals have been arrested as part of a statewide investigation into alleged auto insurance fraud, including staged vehicle crashes and fraudulent insurance claims totaling nearly $500,000.

The investigation, conducted jointly by the New York State Police and the New York State Department of Financial Services, uncovered more than a dozen suspected fraud cases across New York City and several counties throughout the state. Seven of the arrests occurred in the Bronx.

According to state officials, the cases involved individuals allegedly staging vehicle collisions, submitting false injury claims and seeking insurance payments for fabricated incidents. In one Bronx case, a staged crash in March reportedly resulted in approximately $70,000 in fraudulent medical costs.

The enforcement effort follows a series of initiatives introduced by the Hochul administration to address rising auto insurance premiums. In 2025, insurance companies reported 43,811 incidents of suspected motor vehicle insurance fraud to the Department of Financial Services, representing an 80% increase since 2020.

New York State also enacted auto insurance reforms as part of its fiscal year 2027 budget, including provisions allowing prosecutors to pursue criminal penalties against individuals who organize staged accidents, in addition to those directly involved in the collisions.

State officials say fraudulent claims contribute to higher insurance costs for consumers. The administration estimates that staged accidents and related fraud can add as much as $300 annually to drivers' insurance premiums.

The investigations remain ongoing, with additional enforcement actions possible as state agencies continue efforts to identify and prosecute suspected insurance fraud.
