Construction Begins on $175 Million Affordable Housing Development in the Bronx

Construction is underway on a $175 million affordable and supportive housing development in the Soundview section of the Bronx, bringing 228 new rental apartments to the neighborhood.
The 22-story building, located at 1920 Turnbull Avenue, will include 137 permanent supportive housing units for formerly homeless individuals and families, along with 90 income-restricted apartments for households earning no more than 60% of the area median income.
The project is being developed by Gilbane Development, Strada Development LLC and the Center for Urban Community Services (CUCS), with architectural design by Magnusson Architecture and Planning.
The development will feature approximately 3,500 square feet of on-site supportive services operated by CUCS. Additional amenities will include a fitness center, community room, laundry facilities, bicycle storage, outdoor recreational space and a 24-hour staffed lobby.
Designed to meet Passive House and Enterprise Green Communities standards, the building will incorporate energy-efficient insulation, ventilation systems and all-electric heating, cooling and appliances. Construction and environmental remediation are proceeding simultaneously under New York State's Brownfield Cleanup Program.
The project received $3.5 million in capital funding from New York City Council Member Amanda Farías during fiscal year 2026. Supportive services and rental assistance will be funded through New York City's 15/15 Supportive Housing Initiative.
The development represents a significant investment in the Bronx's residential housing inventory and efforts to expand affordable housing opportunities throughout New York City.
Construction is expected to be completed in March 2029.
