Residential real estate sales take big hit with COVID-19

WHITE PLAINS – Home sales in the second quarter took a double-digit hit in the Hudson Valley because of COVID-19 and the closure of all but essential businesses in early March.

The sales statistics were compiled by the Hudson Gateway Association of Realtors.

Orange County was hit hardest with a 26.5 percent decline in sales compared to the same period last year. A total of 625 homes sold in the second quarter of 2020, compared by 850 in 2019.

In Rockland County, home sales dropped by 22.1 percent, with 359 homes sold compared to 461 sold in the same period last year.

Sales fell by 21.3 percent in Westchester County, going from 1,500 sold in the second quarter of 2019 to 1,181 sold in the same period in 2020.

In Sullivan County, sales dipped by 10.6 percent, with 195 homes sold in the second quarter of 2020, compared with 218 sold in 2019.

Putnam County home sales declined by 6.6 percent, going from 243 homes sold in 2019 to 227 sold in the second quarter of 2020.

The realtors’ organization because of “the creativity and resiliency” of agents and brokers along with the enhanced use of technology, “continued demand could result in a fairly rapid recovery.”
