Orange County home sales fall off in first quarter

HUDSON VALLEY – Four of the five counties in the Hudson Gateway Association of Realtors saw sales of single-family homes increase in the first quarter of the year.

Only Orange County lost ground in the January through March period, with 3.5 percent fewer homes sold.

Rockland County saw double-digit growth at 15 percent while Putnam County home sales grew by 8.7 percent, Westchester sales increased by 7.2 percent, and Sullivan County home sales rose by 6.1 percent.

In Rockland, 452 homes sold, compared with 393 from January through March 2019. During the three months in 2020, condominium sales fell by 9.4 percent, going from 117 last year to 106.

Putnam County sold homes rose from 206 last year to 224. Condominium sales grew by a whopping 37.5 percent.

Westchester first-quarter single-family home sales rose from 984 in 2019 to 1,055 this year. Condo sales fell 9.7 percent, from 238 to 233.

In Sullivan County, 209 homes sold, compared to 197 last year. Condo sales were flat with only two units being sold each year.

In Orange County, single-family home sales dropped from 764 to 737. Condo sales fell by 26.5 percent, from 117 in 2019 to 86 in 2020.

Some realtors reported that despite COVID-19, they were conducting virtual tours of homes for prospective buyers.
